Week 11: You get what you pay for.

a sign of the times.....
a sign of the times…..

If there was any doubt about the contractor that I have chosen, it was removed this week.

For this project, I chose Case Design/Remodeling as the primary contractor.  I’ve done some smaller projects with them in the past and I was pretty confident that they would be competent to handle such a complex renovation job.  I trust that they wouldn’t disappear in the middle of the night with my deposit and leaving me high and dry.  Frankly, I didn’t get the normal three different bids.  I knew it was a risk and the past week has proven that my risk has paid off big time.

So I’m a bit of a detailed oriented type of guy when it comes to a project like this.  It’s a lot of money and a lot of moving pieces.  Not only is there Case Design, who is the primary contractor, but various sub-contractors as well as the DIY stuff that I do on the weekends and after work.  I also spit out a lot of emails and texts with a whole assortment of questions.  I’m kinda OCD like that.

This past week had me asking a boatload of questions about flooring, schedule timing about painting, cabinets, and a whole lot of other stuff.  Case was also working hard to put in the drywall and finishing it off, trying to get it ready for me to paint this weekend.  Sadly, the weather did not cooperate for the drywall to finish, um, drying.  So the painting will have to hold off until after work.  But they’ve busted their hump and even talked me down from my “Oh my god, I have to do XYZ, otherwise, I’ll continue to smell that incontinent dog scent forever” moments when it came to the flooring.  They’ve accommodated my needs tremendously, and even willing to help with me save money where I can.  They even do a few little extra things that were unexpected but definitely welcomed and appreciated.  It is not often that you find a contractor like that.

I previously did a bathroom renovation job in my old house.  The bathroom turned out ok but the contractor was a nightmare to work with.  My experience with Case Design has restored my faith in contractors.  I cannot recommend them enough.  They are definitely worth every penny, quarter, and Benjamin that I’ve spent so far.  There are more Benjamins that will be spent, but at least I know it will be well spent.
