Week 10: When a door closes…

What do I do now?

When one door closes, another one has to be built. Ok this isn’t the phrase as it is known but that had been my reality that emerged. Last weekend was the Memorial Day weekend. That meant time for me to work on the house.

On the agenda were fixing up the linen closet and installing pre-hung interior doors for the bedrooms. I did a bit of research for the door  job and got all the tools. I was also excited to break in the new cordless brad nail gun! Always about new toys.  I got a couple of hollow core pre-hung doors from Lowes. I was all set to go.

But I hit a few snags. The rough opening is 80″ tall. The door required an opening of about 81.5″.  Ok, no problem! I’ll just cut off 1.5″ from the bottom and it’ll fit in. So after sawing off the bottom a bit, I tried to put the door jamb into the opening. But then i noticed that the jamb is sticking out from the opening a bit too much. Sadly that was when i realized that the jamb was 4.5″ in depth but the rough opening is 3.5″. Hurn…..

So my plans to install a couple of doors were cold-cocked because I was not thorough with my measurements. I returned the second door I bought and started research on how to build my own door. I have to wait until I move in and get my table saw and other power tools from storage. So that’s another item on the to do list for later. At least I made some progress on patching up the linen closet. But I’m still working on it. The closet has been taking a lot longer than expected.

The contractors however have been more productive than I. They’ve been finishing up wiring, including gigabit ethernet cables. Insulation has been installed in the kitchen and the upstairs bathroom.  Concrete has been poured in to cover the plumbing for the downstairs bathroom.

The one upside from my fiasco is that I now have an excuse to buy a Dremel set for my door project. Soon, I will have enough gadgets to open up my own tool rental company!
